Naturally, we all want our bathroom tiles to look fabulous but equally, if not more important, is what sits behind them.
I'm seeing more and more customers, who have paid for bathroom renovations, only for them to turn into leaking nightmares, needing urgently repair. It's heartbreaking!
I've been a professional tiler for nearly 30 years and am proud to get most of my work through word of mouth, which is because my work is the best around and prices always competitive - I want my customers delighted every time, it's just who I am as a person, never mind as a highly experienced professional tiler!
BEFORE
A recent job I did for a customer in Dublin reminded me of the main reason that bathroom tiles start leaking (and don't stop!) and I felt it time to do a Blog post on it. I hope it helps.
Upon inspection of two bathrooms that had damage from consistently leaking tiling work, we quickly identified the issue. Horrendous waterproofing behind the tiles.
AFTER/FIXED!
I've put together two videos above; the before and after...as you'll see in the before video, a VERY common cost-saving, hidden botch job as I see it, where folded cardboard is stuck into the walls, and the tiles fitted on top. The customer can't see it and most wouldn't know that it's an issue - UNTIL water starts finding its way behind, collects and eventually starts leaking through the tiles, even causing some tiles to fall off. Appalling tiling work.
In the second video, the after video, we've completed the repair and I hope you agree, it looks fabulous - my customer certainly thinks so!
We ripped out all the cardboard, re-studded the wall in timber. We added 12cm cement tile backer-boards, which are immensely strong AND water proof and the tiling not only looks amazing but will last for years and years and years now, with zero leakage.
On request of the customer, we also re-plumbed the floor, fitted a beautiful shower and painted the ceiling too - one bathroom and one en-suite, both fit for a King (and Queen!)
